Penn Medicine strongly encourages everyone to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and stay up to date with vaccination this fall.

In agreement with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidance, we recommend that patients receive an updated 2023-24 COVID-19 vaccine. COVID-19 vaccination remains our best defense against the virus to protect against both the short- and long-term effects of COVID-19 infection.

Penn Medicine will be administering the 2023-24 updated Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at select primary care practices. The updated Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine (2023-24 Formula) includes a monovalent (single) component that corresponds to the Omicron variant XBB.1.5 of SARS-CoV-2. Updated COVID-19 vaccines are also widely available at retail pharmacies and community vaccine clinics. Find a vaccination location near you at Vaccines.gov.

Who Should Get the COVID-19 Vaccine

The CDC website has important information about COVID-19 vaccines and how to make sure you are up-to-date with vaccination. Current CDC and ACIP recommendations are that all adults should get an updated 2023-2024 Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine as long as it has been at least two months since you got your last dose of any COVID-19 vaccine. The updated Novavax protein subunit vaccine is currently under review by the FDA for emergency use authorization in people 12 and older.

If you have any questions about the updated COVID-19 vaccine and whether you should receive it, please contact your health care provider. We recommend that you speak with your doctor before receiving an updated vaccine if you have a history of a severe allergic reaction to a previous vaccine.
